Michele Barnwell
Michele Barnwell has been a showrunner and executive producer for over fifteen years, delivering award-winning documentary content during that time. She served as showrunner for Season 2 of High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America, a critically acclaimed 4-part Netflix documentary series that explores the history and legacy of African-American descendants of enslaved Africans through their cuisine and cultural traditions. Michele also co-executive produced Netflix’s 8-part original docuseries Flint Town, which offers an intimate look at the intersection of community trust and law enforcement in a small American city grappling with severe economic decline and the aftermath of a water-contamination crisis. Her body of work reflects a deep sensitivity to human rights, cultural narratives, and a keen eye for capturing the emotional truth at the core of every story. Michele is committed to authentically documenting and sharing the stories of individuals whose lives offer profound insights into larger societal issues. Michele has spoken at conferences in the U.S., Canada, and South Korea on topics such as crafting authentic stories and documentary filmmaking. She holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a Master of Fine Arts in Film Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles.
