About the Film

The Act of Coming Out is a documentary film director posts a casting call on backstage.com seeking queer and trans actors to audition for an unusual and ubiquitous role. This role is not an individual but rather an experience: that of coming out. The actors show up one by one ready to play the game and get the part. This documentary takes the shape of a casting tape. One by one each actor reenacts typical coming out scenes that become more infused with their own unique biographies as the film progresses. In a final role and body swap, the director performs their own coming out experience with one of the actors.
