Connecting Cultures Through Film
AFS screens American films, trains international filmmakers and strengthens cross-cultural networks of filmmakers.
American Film Showcase is the United States’ flagship film and TV cultural exchange program connecting people through the power of visual storytelling. AFS is a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.
AFS Impact
Since 2012, AFS has partnered with U.S. Embassies in more than 135 countries to engage international audiences through American film and professional development programming.
01: Screenings
AFS partners with American film distributors to offer U.S. Embassies an annual collection of critically acclaimed American documentaries to screen. AFS films have included Oscar-winning documentaries such as The Last Repair Shop, Free Solo, and Summer of Soul. Each year, these 40+ films provide a nuanced view of American life and reflect the diversity of the American experience for international audiences.
02 : Workshops
AFS collaborates with U.S. Embassies to organize filmmaking masterclasses and workshops for emerging and established global filmmakers. Led by award-winning American filmmakers and industry professionals, AFS workshops have ranged from cinematography training in The Gambia to running mock TV writers rooms in Colombia. AFS also hosts an international documentary residency at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles every year.
03: International Filmmaker Exchanges
AFS supports international storytellers through our film festival exchange program. From the biggest international documentary film festival in Amsterdam, to American animation, VR and documentary festivals from Maine to Texas, AFS connects international filmmakers with mentors, producers, and distributors from across the American film and TV industry.
