Films + Screenings

Film Slate

AFS provides U.S. Embassies with an annual curated collection of critically acclaimed new American documentaries covering a wide variety of themes, from entrepreneurship to African-American history, women’s empowerment, STEM education, and more. Our roster of 40+ films includes features, shorts, and episodic docs, which reflect the diversity of the American experience and provide space for cross-cultural dialogue with a wide range of audiences.

Screenings

Each year, U.S. Embassies organize 450+ screenings of AFS titles often in partnership with academic institutions, government entities, NGOs, and other organizations. Venues have included schools, arts organizations, local theaters, and film festivals. From open air screenings powered by generators in remote areas that have no access to theaters, to grand historic cinematheques, AFS screenings have taken place in over 135 countries, reaching 500,000+ people.

Studio Partnerships

For more than a decade, AFS has partnered with major American film studios, independent distributors, and filmmakers to bring American films to new global audiences. Our partners include Amazon, Breakwater Studios, Disney, LA Times Short Docs, Netflix, POV, The New York Times Op-Docs, The New Yorker, Warner Bros. Discovery, and more. Thanks to our partnership with the digital transfer platform PIX, we are able to securely send film files to U.S. Embassies.

AFS allows us to reach audiences that we may not otherwise be able to reach and talk about subject matters that are sometimes difficult to talk about. It’s kind of hard to go into a space and say, ‘Okay, let's talk about gender-based violence’, out of the gate. But if you go into a space, watch a film, and have a discussion afterwards, it makes it more impactful. Carlos Coello, Public Engagement EV, U.S. Embassy, Ecuador
